Under the hood, Give is two organizations - Give Technologies, a for-profit company, and Give Foundation, a not-for-profit company.
Give Technologies is a for-profit company because we believe that to build innovative giving products and to serve as many donors as possible, we need to build a sustainable technology business that has the ability to take in funding from equity investors.
While it is considered a for-profit company (Canada does not have a Public Benefit Corporation designation like many states in the United States does), our core mission is to help make the world a better place by making philanthropy accessible to everyone.
Give Foundation is a not-for-profit company because we want to be able to receive and distribute donations as efficiently as possible. Receiving donations through Give Foundation makes them exempt from sales tax, and once we receive charitable status (our application is pending), we are able to issue tax receipts for donations.
Our business model is simple and transparent: we charge a 5% fee on top of your donations, which goes to the for-profit. It pays for our server costs, the employees that build Give, and the research that ensures your donations are going to the right organizations.
